Berber Village

Day Trip to the Berber Villages

A trip to Marrakech isn’t complete without seeing the city outside the walls of the Medina and exploring the backyard of Marrakech, unlike anything you have ever seen.
Take a trip through the vibrant and arid peaks of the Altas Mountains and learn about the Berber Villages to see how the local live their daily lives.IMG_1262

There are a number of different companies that offer tours through the Atlas Mountains, including a variety of activities and options for how many days you would like to explore Marrakech’s backyard. We chose to do a tour through 4X4 Camel.

Itinerary of Berber Villages Tour

  • Starting promptly at 09:00 AM your driver will pick you up from your desired location and begin the journey through the Ourika Valley.
  • You have the option of choosing a camel ride through the countryside. The ride is about twenty minutes and costs about 100 dirhams ( around 10 euro ) per person (directly to the camel owners).

  • After a twenty-minute camel ride (which trust me: muscles you didn’t know existed will be twitching); you jump back in the car and towards a local Berber Heritage Museum. Where you will learn about the fascinating history of these villages and how they still operate today.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask your driver to stop along the road to capture the beauty of the Altas Mountains.

  • After learning about the culture of the Berber people, you are fortunate enough to visit an Argan Oil Cooperative. Where locally produced oil found only in Morocco is turned into argan oil which has many health benefits you learn about while watching the women peel and turn these seeds into oil. This particular cooperative provides not only an income but also an educational opportunity for local women.
  •  After you decide if you wish to purchase argan oil, you. We then leave the Ourika road to take a mountain road heading towards Asni, the second village. During this drive, you will have the opportunity to meet children from the local villages. We brought along some school supplies which we donated to their happy faces!

  • Now, LUNCH TIME! Which is set inside a family Berbers house that overlooks a traditional village. The food is handmade with local home-grown produce, ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS and you get to enjoy the appetizing meal with a gorgeous view of the Toubkal mountain and the Atlas Moutain range.
